Miles Hurley Receives Elder Law Attorney Certification
Founder of Hurley Elder Care Law Becomes One of Seven Nationally Certified Attorneys in the State of Georgia

ATLANTA – January 11, 2010 – Hurley Elder Care Law, a comprehensive Elder Law Firm, today announces that founding attorney Miles Patrick Hurley has received his Elder Law Attorney Certification. This designation is offered by the National Elder Law Foundation (NELF), the only organization approved by the American Bar Association to offer certification in the area of elder law. Hurley is one of seven certified elder law attorneys in the state of Georgia to receive this certification, and one of less than 400 nationwide.

“The certification shows a commitment to maintaining and improving proficiency in elder law through continual practice and continuing legal education,” said Hurley. “It validates my competence and expertise in handling matters that affect older citizens. Without this, I cannot call myself a specialist. It’s to the equivalent of a physician becoming board certified in a specialty.”

Certification in elder law provides a measure of assurance to the public that the attorney has an in-depth working knowledge of the legal issues that impact the growing senior population. The certification process took approximately three years, and Hurley must be re-certified every five years.
“The certification shows a commitment to maintaining and improving proficiency in elder law through continual practice and continuing legal education,” said Hurley.
Hurley’s certification comes at a critical point in senior care as the population for this age group is on the rise. Consider these statistics:
According to The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), the number of Baby Boomers in America is estimated to be 78.2 million and the first Baby Boomers will be turning 65 in 2011;
By the year 2020, the over-65 population is expected double;
Globally, and for the first time in recorded history, it will soon be the case that older people will outnumber children under age 5; and
According to The National Elder Law Foundation, elder law is one of the fastest growing fields in the legal profession.

The certification process is a rigorous one and those certified must meet the following criteria: licensed to practice law in at least one state, actively practicing law for at least five years; maintained a good standing in all jurisdictions in which licensed; spent at least 16 hours per week practicing elder law during the three years prior to certification; and have handled at least 60 elder law matters during that time covering 13 different topic areas.
By the year 2020, the over-65 population is expected double.
Additionally, Hurley must have participated in at least 45 hours of continuing legal education during the three years prior to certification, be favorably evaluated by at least five other elder law specialists and pass a difficult full day exam (which has a pass rate of only 30 percent).

Hurley has practiced law for 18 years – with a concentration on elder law over the past five years. He currently has a comprehensive elder law firm in Atlanta, GA. Hurley is a founding member and current Vice President of the Life Care Planning Law Firms Association (LCPLFA). He is also on their Board of Directors. In addition, he is on the Board of Directors for The Lewy Body Dementia Association. He is President of the Georgia Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA). He is also the Troop Committee Chair Elect for Boy Scout Troop Number 232. He is a graduate of the Georgia State University College of Law and has been a resident of Atlanta for 30 years.
